Where Two Proud Cultures Unite
As with any other holiday, Louisiana transforms what would otherwise be a fairly ordinary St. Patrick's Day celebration into one of epic proportions, spanning multiple days with parades and parties.
What began as a simple idea between two friends, Italian Henry Hoff and Irishman Eddie Renton Sr., has grown into one of the largest parades in the New Orleans metro area.
Since 1983, the Louisiana Irish-Italian Parade has brought together hundreds of thousands of spectators each year along Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, celebrating both cultures' deep roots in South Louisiana. The parade is always on the Sunday after St. Patrick's Day, bringing the city's full week of celebrations to a joyful close.
Irish immigrants who arrived in South Louisiana in the 17th and 18th centuries settled in what became known as the Irish Channel and in neighboring Jefferson Parish communities, leaving a lasting cultural mark on the region.
Italian-Americans formed one of New Orleans' largest communities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Italian heritage is celebrated proudly across Jefferson Parish, with the Irish-Italian Parade as its signature springtime highlight.
One Irish and one Italian citizen lead the parade each year. Past honorees have included local politicians, judges, and prominent community figures.
Floats, decorated trucks, marching groups, dance troupes, and more span the entire route.
In true Louisiana fashion, riders toss food alongside beads and trinkets. Catch cabbages, carrots, lemons, and more from the floats!
This is one of the most family-oriented parades in the region. Bring the kids and grandkids. It's a tradition for all generations!
Live music, dancing groups, and New Orleans-style fun create an atmosphere unlike any other St. Patrick's Day event in the country.
