  • Harahan & River Ridge

Harahan & River Ridge

Harahan was named in honor of James Theodore Harahan, president of the Illinois Central Railroad from Harahan Elementary 1906-1911.

It hugs the banks of the Mississippi River, and its Huey P. Long bridge was the first in Louisiana to span the River's waters.

Another of Harahan's most notable structures is Harahan Elementary, located on Jefferson Highway. It opened to students in 1926 and was added to the Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic places in 1983.

Centuries old Oak & Pecan trees line the streets and have become the symbols of Harahan. A quaint community sharing a love of family and community Harahan offers a variety of shopping and dining. Annually in the fall, the city enjoys the Pecan Festival in the fall with live entertainment, activities for kids and of course, pecans prepared in a variety of ways!

Park of Heroes

Park of Heroes "Commemorating and venerating American military service, and achievements of those citizens of Harahan, Louisiana that have committed the ultimate sacrifice in defense of what is right and good throughout the world." This beautifully erected monument is located adjacent to the Harahan gymnasium and baseball field, making it easily seen by, and accessible to, everyone! Honoring the lives and sacrifice of those who fought for Freedom. The Park honors those who fought in Vietnam, Korea, WWII, and Operation Iraqi. A standout feature within the park is the Memorial Water Wall. It is 16' with nine columns representing those men that lost their lives but are buried in Louisiana, the water falling represents the tears our community sheds for the 16 fallen heroes, and the seven "Dragons Teeth" at the base represent those that perished and are never returning.

River Ridge

River Ridge was developed by French Colonists and their descendants in the late 18th century for large sugar plantations. For many years, the area remained rural farmland until the post-World War II suburbanization era. To create a sense of community, the area was officially renamed River Ridge in 1974.

A community rich in family and pride of its heritage, River Ridge offers a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and storefronts, and is home to the regions only KOA Campground, the KOA Holidays Campground is located in River Ridge just blocks away from the historic district of Rivertown, locate in Kenner.
