The Bonnabel Boat Launch located at 1599 Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie will re-open to the public this weekend after being closed since October 2015.  Repairs and construction to the boat ramps were completed Friday afternoon and the final temporary fencing around the construction site has been removed.

Jefferson Parish was selected by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to receive a $350,000 grant through Wallop-Breaux funds.  Ashley Savarino Unlimited Construction, LLC, was awarded the contract, all work was completed at a cost of $614,261.

Construction involved installing sheet pilings for a temporary dam, pumping out water within the ramp area, and removing existing concrete ramps.  The four back-down ramps have been replaced and lengthened to the ends of the existing piers, a curb has been built and Rip Rap has been placed behind the curb at the boat launch.  The angles of the new ramps have changed slightly to allow boats to lift off trailers more easily.  The small courtesy dock on the eastside has also been repaired and existing timbers on all sides have been replaced.

District 5 Representative Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vrancken, says “This was a major project to construct four totally new boat ramps at Bonnabel.  I’m thrilled our residents are now able to enjoy improved access to Lake Pontchartrain just in time for the beautiful spring weather and summer recreation.”

Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation Director C.J. Gibson added, “We are excited about the opening of the boat launch.  JPRD is aware that the delay with its re-opening has been an inconvenience to Bonnabel Boat launch users, but it was necessary to ensure that the site was completely safe and constructed to the level of quality that Jefferson Parish residents have been accustomed.”
